A crowd of over a hundred people traveled around downtown Stuart Saturday night for the Stuart Revitalization Committee’s inaugural historical walk. Visitors from the community and as far as Denver, Colorado visited prominent Stuart landmarks, including the Saints Center, Masonic Temple, the Former First National Bank, and the Depot.
At each stop reenactors portrayed well-known and deceased Stuart residents to share the history of the buildings and notable facts, such as when Bonnie and Clyde robbed the former First National Bank. Attendees heard the over a century old organ played at the First Congregational Church by “Bonnie Wood,” an organist during the 1940’s portrayed by Ames resident Priscilla Franken, “The church contacted the Organ Guild website and found out that I was a substitute organist. They just enquired with me if I had an interest in working with them to possibly open up the organ and use it for some events and I said, ‘Hey, you picked the right person because I’m a member of the Organ Historical Society, I have been for years! I love old things.”
Committee member Russ Wagner said the inaugural historical walk was a success, and the number of attendees quadrupled what they anticipated. The committee hopes to have more walks in the future, possibly during the day to give visitors a chance to shop at Stuart’s businesses.
