Dallas County Conservation has had a very busy October, and it will wrap up this weekend with their Day of the Dead celebration.

The program will be held Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Forest Park Museum. Conservation Outreach Coordinator Ken Keffer says the celebration will take a look at the history of the Day of the Dead holiday, in particular how it relates to the annual Monarch Butterfly migration. Keffer adds, Dallas County Conservation has focused on the migration a lot this summer, and he believes the party will be a fitting cap on that programming. “The Day of the Dead is when the souls of the deceased have an opportunity to come back to visit their families. And it actually coincides with the Monarchs’ arrival on their wintering range in Mexico. So we’re big fans of the Monarch here in the Dallas County Conservation Board, and so we’re going to kind of wrap that up with this Day of the Dead celebration and with some Monarch-themed activities as well!”

Keffer adds, earlier this year there was a Conservation activity where attendees painted animal skulls, and those will be revealed at the celebration. They will also have some unpainted skulls that people can color at the event to add to the collection. There is no cost to attend the program, though registration is required.
