Greene County finished the high school football season with a record of eight wins and just one loss, but even after pummeling number nine OABCIG (Ida Grove) in Jefferson on Friday night, there was no guarantee the Rams would make the Class 2A playoff field because they did not win the District 9 crown. That went to 5-4 Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) by virtue of a 16-8 victory over the Rams on Sept. 28.
Greene County head coach Mitch Moore was asked if there were some anxioux moments in the three-plus hours from the end of the game to when the playoff qualifiers were announced.
“The IHSAA said they were coming out with it around Midnight, and it was about 1 o’clock before we got the actual results. We were anxious just because we left one on the board there in week six, and we weren’t a guarantee lock to get in, but certainly our body of work and what we had done over nine weeks made us feel we were one of the top 16 teams in the state and we would have been really disappointed had we not been in. We had an elated group of coaches and certainly deserve to be in the top 16.”
The Rams open the playoffs on Friday, Oct. 26 in Van Horne vs. Benton Community on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage starts at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7 p.m. Both teams are 8-1 and both are top 10 rated.
