jefferson welcomeJefferson residents looking to get rid of unsightly or unwanted items before winter can do so next week during the city-wide fall clean up week.

From October 22nd through the 25th, sanitation crews will be picking up extra items on normal garbage routes. City Administrator Mike Palmer reminds everyone that each homeowner can have up to two hopper loads of garbage for free and any additional hopper loads are $25 each. There is also a $25 charge for appliances and $40 for those that contain freon such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air-conditioners.

Furniture, carpet, padding, windows, lumber, construction debris, deck and fencing material will all be included for free within the two hopper load maximum amount. Yard waste and scrap metal will not count toward the two free hopper loads. However, yard waste must be in the 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags and not in garbage cans. Tree trimmings and brush will also be picked up and are encouraged to be separated into arm load piles. Whole trees will not be picked up. Palmer makes one request of residents.

“The one thing we really ask is if you have cardboard, and it’s raining, is to try and hold off to put it out until the last minute or please put it in plastic bags. Because cardboard, as everybody knows, is going to absorb that water and it just falls apart. And it is a mess in people’s yard and just to handle it.”

Residents are encouraged to have their items at the curbside by 6am on their garbage day to ensure proper pick up. A full list of accepted items can be found by clicking the link below.
