A rash of turnovers at crucial moments undermined an otherwise outstanding offensive effort Friday night by the Perry varsity football team, resulting in a 35-28 loss to Boone.

The Bluejays started their Senior Night hot, turning a first quarter drive into a 5-yard touchdown pass from Kaleb Olejniczak to Connor Kenyon. On Perry’s first drive of the second quarter they would strike again, this time on a 50-yard pass to Kato Dougan to go up 14-0. However, after a blocked punt gave the Toreadors possession on Perry’s 7-yard line, quarterback Tyler Casotti would run it in for a touchdown on the next play. Boone then got great starting field position on their next drive, when they recovered a fumble on the very next play from scrimmage. They would then cap off a short 35-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown reception by Alex Sturtz. Boone missed the extra point, though, and Perry continued to lead 14-13.

Perry got their offense back in gear on their next drive, scoring on a 27-yard touchdown catch by Ever Tobar. The Bluejays entered halftime leading 21-13. The third quarter went along with little to speak of, until Casotti intercepted a pass and brought it back to Perry’s 20-yard line. On the next play the quarterback would once again find Sturtz in the endzone. Boone converted the 2-point conversion to tie the game. It wouldn’t take long for Perry to hit back, as they scored on their next drive on the first play of the fourth quarter. Olejniczak and Kenyon connected for a touchdown once again, this time from 63-yards.

With the fourth quarter winding down, Boone got even again on a 14-yard touchdown catch by Jackson Hora. Two plays later, another fumble by Perry gave Boone possession at midfield. The Toreadors scored for the final time with 1:35 remaining in the game on a one-handed touchdown grab by Quali Sporaa from 9-yards out. The Bluejays had one final chance, bringing the subsequent drive to Boone’s 30-yard line with under a minute to play. It wasn’t to be though, as the Toreadors’ Tyler Lennon intercepted a pass over the middle. Boone ran out the clock and left Dewey Field with a 35-28 victory.

The loss keeps Perry winless on the season, giving them a record of 0-8 heading into their final week. Next Friday they will head to Humboldt to take on the Wildcats. Make sure to listen to AM 1310, FM 99.7 KDLS for live play-by-play coverage starting at 7 p.m.
