There are several events still to come this month in the Perry Hometown Heritage “Becoming American” film series, and the next one is this coming Tuesday.
On October 16th, there will be a program held at the Perry Public Library titled “Help Wanted?” Program Coordinator Alissa Whitmore says this documentary and discussion should appeal to history buffs in particular. “We’re going to be looking at kind of the history of how immigrants have come to the United States to participate in America’s economy, including the role that they played in building America’s infrastructure, as well as relationships with American workers. So the film for this week will be ‘Destination America: The Golden Door.’ Specifically this documentary looks at how Irish immigrants helped build America’s railroads, Norwegians who settled in the Midwest to start farming here, as well as Mexicans who came in the 1920’s to work in America’s mills and factories.”
The program will be moderated by Jon Wolseth with ISU Extension and Hispanics United for Perry, who has led several discussions in the series so far. It will be co-hosted by the Perry Library, which will also be providing refreshments. There is no cost to attend, and the program will run from 5:45-7:45 p.m. For more information, click the link below.
