liheap_300Certain individuals can now apply for the federally-funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

New Opportunities Greene County Coordinator Teresa Lansman says anyone at least 60-years-old or disabled can apply for the heating assistance program. She points out that qualified individuals will receive a one-time $300 to $400 payment to use on their heating and electric bills throughout the winter months. Lansman adds that while you are on the program, you are guaranteed to not have your heat and electricity shut-off from November 1st through April 30th.

“So if you fall behind when those bills get high, if you pay anything-a little something to just say ‘Hey I’m trying here’-but they cannot disconnect you.”

The program is based off a household’s income. The guidelines can be found by clicking the link below. Lansman notes that about 500 households on average in Greene County participate in LIHEAP every year. Those wanting to sign up for the program must provide proof of income, social security cards for every member of the household and provide a recent utility billing statement. November 1st is when the program is open to everyone to apply.
