It’s homecoming week at ACGC and the first of two Guthrie County showdowns saw a tight contest on the hard court as the ACGC volleyball team hosted Panorama last night. The match certainly didn’t disappoint as far as action is concerned. Though the gold and black were left disappointed after falling to the Panthers: 25-21, 23-25, 24-26, 21-25.
The Chargers got out of the gate early with a first set win thanks in part to four straight aces off the hands of freshman Chloe Largent. She also had seven kills in that first set to lead all players. Panorama quickly responded, opening the 2nd set on a 9-1 run. The Chargers closed the gap with a 5-0 run of their own off the serve of sophomore Audrey Stowe to tie the set at 12. But Panorama senior Morgan Johnk killed the momentum with a set-clinching ace. The rest of the match was close, but Panorama took the momentum from there.
Largent led the Chargers in total kills with 17 and aces with seven. Junior Olivia Laabs led the gold and black in digs with 17 while senior Savana Fuller struck nine blocks in the loss. The defeat drops the Chargers to 15-7 (5-3) and Panorama improves to 14-7 (7-1). Earlier in the week the Chargers swept the I-35 Roadrunners: 25-14, 25-11, 25-8. Largent led that game once again with 17 kills and three aces.
ACGC also learned their postseason fate on Tuesday. For the second straight year the Chargers received a bye into the quarterfinals. They will host the winner of Madrid and Ogden in Guthrie Center on Monday, October 22nd. ACGC has never dropped a match to Madrid, including a quarterfinal sweep last year and regular season sweep this year. They will play at Ogden on Tuesday.
