Perry Hometown Heritage has begun its fall programming series titled “Becoming American.” After a great start in Perry, the series now shifts to a different location that will require a bit of travel.

Program Coordinator Alissa Whitmore explains, “So the next screening in our series is going to be at the State Historical Museum. If people are interested in carpooling, I encourage you to contact us and we can see if we can arrange carpooling from Perry to Des Moines. But this particular screening is going to be about the history of immigration. So it’s looking at a period from 1820 to 1924, when about 40 million immigrants came to America.”

The documentary film and discussion series will offer two selections at the event. The first is a snippet from “New York: the Power and the People,” and the second from “The Jewish Americans: A World of their Own.” The two films relate to the mass immigration from eastern and southern Europe to New York City in the 19th century. The moderator for the program will be Drake University Professor Inbal Mazar. Additionally, throughout the week the State Historical Museum will be presenting a mini-exhibit on immigration to Iowa during the same time frame.

The film viewings will be held on Tuesday, September 25th from 5:15-7:15 p.m. There is no cost to attend, registration is not required, and free appetizers will be provided by Cafe Barrata’s thanks to the State Historical Society.
