For a second straight week, a Guthrie County high school football team will square off against the Mount Ayr Raiders. Mount Ayr used a 38 point second quarter to top the West Central Valley Wildcats in Stuart last week, 54-29. The Raiders welcome the Panorama Panthers to town tomorrow night as Class 1A District 8 play continues across the region. Panther head football coach Mike Kauzlarich joined the Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Guthrie County PM Sports Page Monday night and spoke highly of the Raiders’ squad. “They are coming in with a 4-1 record,” Kauzlarich said, “(They are) coming off a really strong, promising performance against West Central Valley on the road. They’re obviously going to be a tough test, but that’s what you want to see. Every Friday night, you want to go out there and see what you’re made of, and it’ll be nice and refreshing to get back onto the field after last week.”
The Panthers are coming off a one-point district-opening loss last Friday night at the hands of the Clarinda Cardinals, 28-27. Panorama committed 20 penalties in the contest resulting in 175 yards in markoffs. A player the Panthers have to watch out for is Mount Ayr sophomore Payton Weehler. The dual-threat quarterback has almost 1,000 yards of total offense and 14 total touchdowns. The varsity game between the Panthers and Raiders kicks off around 7 p.m. tomorrow at Mount Ayr High School.
