The ACGC football team has found recent success on the defensive side of the ball. The Chargers are third in Class 1A District 8 in scoring defense, allowing an average of 17.5 points per game. Unfortunately for the gold and black, they are dead last in scoring offense with an average of just seven points per game.
Head Coach Cody Matthewson is puzzled that the defensive successes haven’t been able to translate to the offensive side of the ball. “I don’t know if it’s a trust thing. I don’t know if it’s a heart thing or if we’re too tired and maybe we like defense more. We can see that we can do it on the defensive side of the ball (so) why can’t we corelate this on the offensive side of the ball. That’s where we’re lacking.”
In their three-year history, ACGC has never scored more than 27 points in a game. They reached that mark in the opening week against West Central Valley last season. The only other time they’ve scored more than 20 points was in week nine of their inaugural season, when they put up 22 against Logan-Magnolia. The Chargers will have a tough test on Friday as they face the defending Class 1A State Champion Van Meter Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are averaging just under 41 points per game on offense and have not allowed a point in their last two victories.
