acgcIn their last 38 games combined, ACGC and Woodward Academy have just one win. Both will look to prove they deserve another as they square off on the gridiron tonight at Hawk Stadium in Woodward.

Though the Knights haven’t won a game in nearly three years, they came close to starting the season off at 1-0 last Friday. Senior quarterback Lashaud Dowell contributed to nearly 300 of the team’s 376 yards of total offense in a 28-26 loss. He threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns and was the leading rusher with 85 yards. Though his three interceptions were certainly costly in their week one defeat at Wayne.

Head Coach Cody Matthewson is very familiar with the program at Woodward Academy.

“I’m familiar with that territory. Bill Dean was the head coach at Woodward Academy when they actually beat Madrid back in the day when I recently graduated. But he’s on the Madrid staff now. Both of his kids play there. I coached his son who was a linebacker and a fullback for me. So I’m familiar with some people who have been involved in that program. Obviously I grew up in Madrid so Woodward Academy, I literally grew up maybe about three to four miles down the road from the campus there.”

The Chargers, who won their first game in program history last season during a week two road game at Des Moines Christian, will be hoping history repeats itself. In that game senior Ben Kingery led the way on the ground, notching 101 rushing yards in the 15-12 win. The gold and black join West Central Valley as the only two Class 1A District 8 teams to suffer a loss in the first week of the season.
