The Greene County defense held Perry to 91 yards of offense on Friday night as the Rams returned the “Cowbell” to Jefferson with a 14-6 victory. The Battle for the Cowbell was the first high school football game of the season for both teams and the win was just the third in the last 20 games for the Rams with two of the three victories vs. the Blue Jays.
Perry had 46 yards on the ground on 22 attempts and they threw for 45 yards on six completions in 17 attempts. Ram linebacker Clayton Smith intercepted a Perry pass.
The defensive effort came from a number of sources with 16 players getting at least one tackle and the Rams recorded 10 tackles for loss. Smith had seven solo tackles and four assists to go with the INT. Defensive tackle Bryce Hoyle had three solos and five assists, with four solo stops and three assists for both Nick Breon and Will Hansen.
The offense had its moments with 348 total yards. Brent Riley threw touchdowns passes of 24 yards to Lance Hughes and 77 yards to Carter Morton.
The Rams were flagged more than 20 times with 19 accepted penalties for 218 yards, which hampered them on both sides of the ball. One of the penalties wiped out a would-be TD run from Clint Dennhardt.
