The first competitions for the Greene County High School volleyball and cross-country teams are today. Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s volleyball Rams are at home in the middle school gym in Jefferson at 5 p.m. hosting at triangular. It’s Perry and Greene County, followed by Perry and Ft. Dodge St. Edmond, and finally, the Rams and Gaels. Heisterkamp is a former assistant coach for the Rams who is in her first season heading the Greene County program. The Rams were 7-27 last season and they return four letter winners from that team.

Coach Jeff Lamoureux’s cross-country girls and boys go to Ames this afternoon for the Gilbert Invitational. It’s a 26 team coed meet held on Iowa State University’s cross-country course. The one state qualifier the Rams had on the girls’ side last year graduated, and their number one runner most of last season did not go out this year. There is still some talent among the girls’ squad, although numbers are down. The Greene County boys’ numbers are up into the low teens, nearly double from a season ago. Paton-Churdan students run cross-country with Greene County for the first time in several years.
