Thirty counties across Iowa will soon be receiving some much needed relief, as President Donald Trump approved the request from Governor Kim Reynolds for a Presidential Disaster Declaration. Among those 30 counties is Dallas and Adair.
The declaration stems from flooding and severe weather events from June 6th through July 2nd. It allows federal funding to be provided to the counties under the Public Assistance Program, and puts into motion long-term federal recovery programs designed to help public entities and select non-profits, some of which are partially matched by state programs. The funds provided may be used for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities and infrastructure damaged in the disaster events. It also may include debris removal, protective measures, repair of damaged public property, and loans and grants for government and public schools.
The initial assessment of the 30 counties included revealed more than $16 million-worth of damage. Additionally, the governor received notification that the declaration includes funding to conduct hazard mitigation activities for the entire state, which will minimize the impact of future disasters by taking steps to reduce or eliminate long-term risks.
