The Iowa State Patrol is investigating what caused a two vehicle crash that killed a Glidden man Wednesday in Greene County.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams told Raccoon Valley Radio, he and a deputy, along with the Jefferson Fire Department and Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident at 12:04pm on Highway 4, near the intersection of County Road E-57. According to the Iowa State Patrol crash report, 71-year-old Wesley Bunnell of Glidden was traveling north on Highway 4 when, for an unknown reason, his 2017 Chevrolet Express Van crossed the centerline and hit the driver’s side of a 2010 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer driven by 21-year-old Arthur Vanderwall of Hull, who had just turned south onto the highway from County Road E-57. According to the report, Vanderwall saw Bunnell’s van drift over into his lane and tried to avoid being hit by swerving into the west shoulder. Both vehicles came to a rest in the southbound lane.
Bunnell was pronounced dead at the scene and Vanderwall was uninjured. Both vehicles were totaled. According to the crash report, Bunnell was wearing his seat belt at the time of the incident. Williams noted that the semi-tractor trailer was hauling 27 hogs and all were alive following the crash.
