DSCN9165Everyone is encouraged to check-out the Hometown Teams traveling exhibit with the Smithsonian Institute at the Greene County Historical Museum.

It is now opened and featured sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer to more unusual sports like roller derby and Ironman triathlons. Plus, there are other exhibits that highlight rivalries, to beings fans and how sports were marketed as collectibles throughout the years. Jefferson Matters: Main Street applied through Main Street Iowa to be one of only six host communities in Iowa for the traveling exhibit and Program Director Peg Raney says it is a complete, self-guided tour.Hometown Teams Exhibit pic 1

“There’s no certain way that you have to go through it. You can linger, and read, and interact to each of the exhibits at your own pace. Kevin Paulsen has a cousin who has a baseball card here in this Smithsonian exhibit. So there have been some local ties with even the Smithsonian.”

Volunteer Ann Ostendorf talks about setting up the exhibit and what it means to her.

“It was beyond my belief on what it’s like. It is so informative, and so interesting, and so neat. And it was fun to piece it together like a puzzle. It’s a really fantastic opportunity that Greene County has this here for the students and for all of our community to learn about what spirit is really about.”

The exhibit is free, but donations are also accepted for the museum as well. The exhibit is open Saturdays from 10am to 6pm, Sundays from noon to 6pm, Wednesdays from 1 to 6pm and Thursdays from 3 to 9pm.
