If you haven’t signed up already, there’s still time take part in the 13th annual Trent Miner Memorial Parent/Child Golf Tournament this Sunday.

The event will be held at the Perry Golf and Country Club, with the first group of golfers taking the tee at 9 a.m. for a 9-hole alternate shot tournament. The second group will start at 1 p.m., and it will be a best shot contest. Joelle Miner, Trent’s mother and organizer for the event, says in addition to the tournament there will be individual hole contests, and prizes for longest drive, longest putt, closest to the pin, and more. Cost to participate is $25 per person and includes a meal, and proceeds go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Caringbridge, and the Trent Miner Memorial Scholarship Fund. There’s also a raffle and silent auction, and Joelle says all the items were donated by the community. “You know, we’ve been very blessed to always have such wonderful support. We’re just overwhelmed every year with the amount of generosity that comes from so many people. It’s just so rewarding to live in a community like this.”

The event started a year after Trent, a Perry High School graduate, lost a battle with cancer. The Miner family felt bringing parents and children together for a golf tournament was a fitting tribute to Trent, who was an avid golfer. Joelle says she’s not sure how long they’ll continue hosting the tournament, but believes it’s been helpful in the grieving process for her family and any who were close to Trent. “Every year, I think, adds a measure of healing to us as a family. We get to go out there and really bask in the whole light of having had Trent in our lives. And he was a pretty outgoing and social kid, so the whole day just kind of reflects the kind of life he had. Very fun, a lot of laughter, had a great life for 19 years.”

Registration for the tournament can be done by stopping in or calling the Perry Golf and Country Club at 515-465-3852. To learn more about the event, listen to today’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program on air and at RaccoonValleyRadio.com.
