Our look back at the Greene County High School sports year continues by remembering a wrestling season unlike any other the Rams have had in the more than 50 years of the program.
A largely inexperienced Greene County wrestling squad took to the mats last November. Making steady progress in terms of numbers out for the sport, and in the win column, the program hit a big snag when a skin disease, commonly known as mat herpes infected the program. There was not middle school or high school wrestling for a good portion of January because of the disease. Varsity wrestlers had little time to prepare for the postseason once the schedule resumed, and for the first time since the 1988-89 season, no Rams qualified for the State Tournament. Clint Dennhardt and Brock Wuebker qualified for the District Tournament, but Dennhardt was determined to have the skin disease in the days leading up to the district, and he did not wrestle.
Last season was the final one with the Rams for longtime coach Mark Sawhill. Zach Beekman moves up from the middle school to become head coach for the 2018-19 season.
