Fireworks

With the Fourth of July now a memory, the Perry Police Department has had a chance to reflect on year two of legalized fireworks.

Per the City’s ordinance, citizens were allowed to discharge fireworks on July 4th, and Police Chief Eric Vaughn said for the most part the law was actually followed. “With a lot of cooperation with the citizens, I think things were better this year than they had been. The officers that were in the park on the Fourth of July, they said it was better than it has (been) in the past. They did address a few issues there, though, and cited a few people for violations for using fireworks in the park. But the officers that were down there said it was probably the quietest they’ve heard in some time.”

All total, Vaughn said officers issued nine citations for fireworks violations, which carry $250 fines. In addition, they also received 27 complaints they were unable to locate. This was a large drop from last year, when they received 56 fireworks calls between June 1st and July 4th, and they didn’t issue any citations. Vaughn felt part of that shift was likely because he and the City Council stressed the importance of issuing citations every time someone was caught discharging fireworks illegally.
