A Perry man is dead after an incident Wednesday afternoon where he was hit while getting out of his vehicle on Dallas County Road P58.

The Iowa State Patrol reports, at around 3:06 p.m., 85-year-old Wilbur Dickerson of Perry was parked on the west shoulder of the southbound lane, near the intersection of P58 and K Trail south of Perry and just north of the Raccoon River Bridge. He was getting out of his 2010 Ford Ranger pickup when a 2017 Ford Focus driven by 20-year-old Saul Tallez of Perry was travelling northbound. According to the report, Tallez crossed over into the southbound lane and side-swiped the pickup, also hitting Dickerson in the process. Dickerson was declared dead at the scene. Both vehicles were totalled in the wreck.

The exact circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated by the Iowa State Patrol. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, Perry Police Department, Perry Fire Department, and Dallas County Emergency Medical Services all responded to the scene.
