The Dallas County Treasurer’s Office has some space problems, and according to Treasurer Mitch Hambleton, they’re getting worse by the day.
Currently, the Department of Motor Vehicles and Driver’s License Station are housed in a small leased building located at 918 Court Street in Adel. The Board of Supervisors hasn’t yet been able to find solutions to the many space concerns in the County, so the Treasurer’s Office enlisted the services of Design Alliance. Hambleton says Jerry Purdy has been working on floor plans to address his space needs. He’s hopeful the Board pays heed, as the cramped conditions affect the workers and customers alike. “If you’ve been down to the driver’s license area, quite often they spill out and they’re sitting on the sidewalk outside of the building, simply because there’s not enough space. Getting Motor Vehicle out of that building and over to the courthouse, as the current proposal is, frees up some additional space to serve the driver’s license folks. And then we can put in some decent seating, to where the public can wait in a better situation than what they currently are.”
With Purdy’s floor plan, the DMV, Tax Department, and the Recorder’s Office would occupy the first floor of the courthouse, all court functions would move to the second floor and above, and the Driver’s License Station would say where it is. The plan is contingent on the County finding a suitable location for Juvenile Court Services, however, and as of yet there has been no concrete solution to that problem. Hambleton emphasizes that Dallas County doesn’t appear to be slowing down in its growth, so the space problems are only going to continue to get more complicated for every County office if nothing is done.
