One pivotal inning cost ADM an opportunity to capture the program’s first summer state championship Friday night in Fort Dodge as Des Moines Hoover defeated the Tigers 8-3 to win the 4A state title. The state championship was Hoover’s second title, winning back in 1982 in the school’s only other state appearance.
ADM looked to be in control midway through the contest after grabbing a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sierra Wyant knocked in the first run with a RBI hit and scored the second run on a Brooke Hickey sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Abby Hlass was dominant through the first four inning allowing one hit and an intentional walk while striking out five.
However, that all changed in the fifth when Hoover sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs off six hits including a pair of home runs. Daija Bates started the inning with a solo home run over the centerfield wall, her first of the season to make it a 2-1 game. Following a Tiger throwing error, Hoover’s lone senior Hannah Blackford smoked a 3-run home run to give Hoover a 7-2 lead.
Both teams added single tallies in the 7th as Hoover captured the state championship as the number seven seed. ADM closes out the season 35-8 and loses one senior in catcher Ashley Tennant. The runner up finish was the third in the history of ADM softball during the summer season.
