Greene County’s high school softball season had eight wins and 19 losses this season. The team batting average and defense weren’t where head coach Tom Kennedy would like them to be, and the pitchers were not the type to post a large number of strikeouts. Perhaps the competition had something to do with the record as well. A check of the first round of the high school State Tournament north of Ft. Dodge shows the Rams played four teams totaling six games to teams that qualified for State, and three of the four have advanced to the semi-finals.
Of the four teams that played and defeated Greene County this season, only Class 1A Martensdale-St. Mary’s lost in the quarterfinals. Heart of Iowa Activities Conference champion Roland-Story (Story City) in 3A advanced, as did 4A teams ADM, the Raccoon River Activities Conference winner, and Newton from the Little Hawkeye.
R-S becomes the first HOIAC team to advance to a State semifinals since Greene County did it under Coach Kennedy in 2014 and ’15, and the Rams finished third at State both seasons.
