City of Perry

This Saturday, the City of Perry is offering their yearly household hazardous waste drop-off day from 9 a.m. – noon at the Police Station parking lot.

Public Works Director Jack Butler emphasizes there is no cost to participate, and they accept a wide range of materials. He describes the process to drop off items. “There’ll be a line, we’ll have a sign up and the guys will be there to greet you. They’ll be wearing their (hazardous materials) suits, they pull you in over top of a tarp, in case something would spill and (will) get it all cleaned up. And again, that’s a yearly deal and it varies; some years we get a ton of cars, and some years, you know you get 50-75.”

Butler adds, they will accept oil-based paint, but there’s no need to bring cans of latex-based paints. Latex paint cans can be emptied or dried-out and thrown away with regular trash. See below for a full list of items that will and won’t be accepted.

Accepted items: Antifreeze, Batteries (only rechargeable), Cleaners, Fertilizers, Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs), Glues, Gasoline and Kerosene, Motor Oil (used), Oil Filters (used), Oil Based Paint, Pesticides, Poison, Pool Chemicals, Roofing Tar, Stains, Varnishes, Thermostats, Thermometers (mercury), Vegetable Oil, Weed Killers and Windshield Fluid.

Not Accepted: Ammunition, asbestos, electronics, explosives, fire extinguishers, latex paint, medications, propane tanks and radioactive materials.
