The Adel City Council is once again whole, after they appointed Dan Miller to fill the seat vacated by Mike Haynes.
Miller was one of three candidates, including Melissa Heikes and Angie Walker-Springer, who attended the recent Council meeting to be considered for the position. Each was interviewed individually and asked the same four questions. Following the interviews, Council member Bob Ockerman nominated Miller, while Jodi Selby nominated Heikes. After discussion and a vote, it was Miller who carried the majority. He was then sworn in by Mayor Jim Peters and took his seat for the remainder of the meeting.
Miller, who moved to Adel in 2015, has been active in the City but admitted that he wouldn’t have sought the Council seat if it was to be selected by special election. He said he was honored to be chosen from among the other qualified candidates, and looks forward to helping the City move forward. “I’ve been participating in some different aspects of boards and commissions with the Council. And I look forward to continuing to contribute in this respect. I think we had some really great candidates for the role. And I think that the community is lucky to have such great individuals who want to participate, and who are willing to put their necks out there for these opportunities.”
The seat became available after Haynes resigned because he moved out of Adel. He had served on the Council for 10 years. Though his seat is now filled, the process isn’t necessarily over. City Attorney Kristine Stone pointed out that anyone can submit a petition to protest the Council’s decision within 14 days, to call for a special election. Miller would have the opportunity to be on the ballot, and indicated he would do so in that scenario.
