If you’ve been to the Carnegie Library Museum in Perry at all this summer, you know the theme of their exhibits and programs has been World War I. Next week, Hometown Heritage is offering an event that will cover a unique local perspective from “The War to End All Wars.”

Mike Vogt is the curator of the Gold Star Museum in Johnston, and he will be giving a talk on Camp Dodge. Hometown Heritage Research Assistant Alissa Whitmore describes the program. “He’s going to talk about the history of Camp Dodge during World War I. So that would have been a place where a lot of local soldiers would have been stationed. And it also kind of has a unique relationship to Perry, because in a lot of cases the soldiers that were stationed at Camp Dodge for training were able to leave on the weekends, and one of the places that they did come to spend some time was Perry.”

Whitmore says one of the things Vogt will likely go over is the outbreak of an illness that swept through the camp at the end of the war, which cost the lives of several soldiers who never even made it to Europe. The event will be held on Monday, July 9th at 7 p.m. at the Carnegie Library Museum.
