Perry School Board 6-11

Whenever school districts receive their Iowa Assessment Report, often times it comes with less-than good news for the respective school board. In Perry, however, their recent assessment brought a great deal of hope.

Superintendent Clark Wicks says Perry’s assessment showed decent numbers for most grade levels and for each individual student demographic. What Wicks found to be most important about the assessment, though, was that nearly every group showed growth on their previous numbers. There was one group in particular who’s progress made Wick’s chest swell with pride. “One thing that I told the Board was: one of the greatest indicators, in my eyes after all my years in education, is you look at students of low SES — low socioeconomic students — if those kids are making at least a year’s-worth of growth, or are proficient, that’s such a true test of the quality of teaching and the quality of learning that takes place. And these folks improved in every category across the board. So kudos to our staff, (and) to the parents for helping with that, this is a huge deal.”

Wicks adds, there’s a lot to be excited about in the District at the moment, including the Dewey Field renovation project, but he feels everything else pales in comparison to such a positive evaluation of the learning taking place.
