The newest head football coach at ACGC has already added another title. At Monday’s Guthrie Center School Board meeting, Cody Matthewson was approved as the new head boys track and field coach. Matthewson, a former state finalist in the 100 meter dash for the Madrid Tigers, takes over for Tyler Mosbach, who resigned to take a teaching position with Carlisle Community Schools.
Matthewson, who is also the strength and conditioning program instructor, tells Raccoon Valley Radio he is impressed with the amount of athletes in the weight room during the offseason. “The numbers have been phenomenal. I expect a lot out of these kids, regardless of what the past shows and what the records have shown in the past…The kids have to understand that everybody is working just as hard as us. We have a gap to close. We have to work twice as hard as everyone else. Everyone has bought into that. Everyone has done a great job. They work their tails off everyday. I push them to the limit every day and they still show up the next day.”
The placement is official, pending approval from the Adair-Casey School Board. This past spring the Charger boys track and field team scored their first points at the state meet in program history. The Guthrie Center Board also approved a sharing agreement for soccer between Panorama and ACGC. Last year ACGC was part of a co-op with West Central Valley and Nodaway Valley.
