Defense was an issue for the Greene County High School softball team on Saturday in State Center at the West Marshall tournament. The Rams committed six errors and lost to the host WM Trojans 4-3, then were charged with eight errors in a 10-2 loss to Newton.Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams fell to 4-13 on the season.

Samantha Hardaway started both games and took both losses. Against WM, she gave up three runs, just one earned, on three hits, in three innings. Hardaway had no walks and four strikeouts. Jenna Beyers went the last three innings and allowed an unearned run on one hit. She had no walks and four strikeouts.

Jenna Beyers drove in two for the Rams and Danielle Hoyle had one RBI vs. WM. All six hits for the Rams were singles. Megan Carey had two hits with one each by Paige Heaning, Beyers, Carmyn Paup, and Lily Muir.

Newton scored five times vs. Hardaway in six innings and five were earned runs. Samantha walked five and struck out one. Byers allowed five runs in one inning and two of the runs were earned. She surrendered five hits, walked no one and struck out no one.

Kyla Beyers knocked in a run, as did Carey vs. the Cardinals. Carey, Jenna Beyers, Laurin Lyons, Izzy Bravard, Hardaway, and Hoyle all had singles.
