The Guthrie County Historical Village and Museum (GCHV) will be hosting an upcoming free program on the effects of lead poisoning on America’s national bird. The “Eagles and Lead- The Poisoning of our National Bird” program will be from 1-2pm on Saturday, June 23rd. Save Our Avian Resources (SOAR) Executive Director Kay Neumann will lead the informational program. Participants will get an up-close encounter with Thora, a bald eagle who was affected by lead poisoning.
GCHV Board Member Rod Stanley tells Raccoon Valley Radio that lead bullets are partially the cause for this recurring trend. He talks about his goal for the program. “It’s just something that some people are never going to change. But if you can get some people to change their habits about not using lead shot…if we can save one bird, one eagle (then) it’s well worth the effort.”
Stanley encourages hunters to use steel bullets or other forms of ammunition instead of lead. To hear more from Stanley on the program, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
