greene county historical societyWith the excessive heat from this past weekend, there were a lot of road blowouts in Greene County.

County Engineer Wade Weiss reported to the County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that there were about a dozen areas throughout the county where there were road blowouts. Weiss explained that blowouts happen when the concrete expands as temperatures get hotter, but when it gets too hot, the concrete buckles and breaks apart. Weiss noted typically when blowouts are reported, he sends the Secondary Roads Department crews out to apply “cold patch” asphalt material to temporarily fix the issue. Then later on in the summer, crews will go back and permanently repair the blowout with new a patch of concrete.

Anytime someone notices a blowout on the county pavement roads, Weiss recommends calling either the non-emergency number of the law enforcement center at 386-2136 or his office at 386-5650 and crews will immediately respond to make the necessary repairs.
