Greene County has scored three runs total in its first three high school baseball games. The Rams started the season with a 2-1 win at Perry, followed by a 3-1 loss in Des Moines to Saydel, followed by a 6-0 loss in Wednesday night’s home opener to Gilbert, who is now 4-1 and winners of four games in a row. Coach John Hupp’s team is 1-2 overall and 0-2 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play.

Starting and losing pitcher Ben Wilkins allowed two first inning runs. He went four innings with seven strikeouts and two walks, while giving up four hits. Wilkinse was replaced by Branden Hoyle to start the fifth. Hoyle threw two scoreless innings before allowing a seventh inning grand slam home run. In three innings of work, Hoyle allowed three hits and three walks. Freshman Easton Johnson of Gilbert hit the grand slam.

Landon Howard went the first six innings for Gilbert on the mound and was the winning pitcher. The Rams out hit the Tigers eight to seven. Nick Breon singled and doubled and Jordan Patterson singled twice.  The other hits were singles from Tom Gannon, Brent Riley, Bryce Hoyle, and Tyler Teeples.

Greene County is in action at home tonight vs. Winterset in non-conference play. The varsity contest can be heard around 7:30 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
