JD ScholtenAbout 25 people attended a meet and greet event in Jefferson for a Democratic candidate for the 4th Congressional District.

JD Scholten is a Sioux City resident. He played minor league baseball in seven different countries and also had a career as a paralegal in technology and innovation law in Seattle. After his grandmother passed away, Scholten moved back to Iowa and bought his family’s home on a farm in Lake Mills. He talked about his two-pronged approach to his campaign. He is on a grassroots movement to go to the people and has been to 35 meet and greet events in 35 counties, all within the last month. His second-prong was to get connected with people. He has 56,000 followers on Tweeter. He has also outraised Republican incumbent Steve King for the primary election, by fundraising over $500,000 through donations.

He addressed several topics including: the Affordable Health Care Act, gun rights, the farm bill, the workforce and the economy. He described how he is addressing the independent voters that can still vote in the primary.

“At the end of the day I’m fighting for these things: I’ll fight for your paycheck, I’ll fight for your job, I’ll fight for your retirement, I’ll fight for your healthcare, and I’ll fight for your education and your kids education. And to me, that is the heartbeat of Iowa politics. If you’re disgusted with what’s happening out in (Washington) DC like I am, with a ‘Do Nothing Congress’ then we need to vote for change.”

Tuesdays event with the second time Scholten has stopped in Jefferson. He Democratic opponents in the primary are Leann Jacobsen and Dr. John Paschen.
