Pate talking with group of Greene County reps about new voter IDs

We are about one week away from the June primary election in Iowa.

Last year, the Iowa Legislature made some changes for how to vote at the polls on election day. Secretary of State Paul Pate recently visited Greene County to talk about those changes. He told Raccoon Valley Radio there may not be any changes in how someone votes, but each voter will need to make sure they bring their driver’s license to their polling location.

“It’s a ‘soft roll out’ which means poll workers will ask you for your ID. If you don’t happen to have it they’ll still let you vote. But we want to prepare you because in 2019 we will be using the voter ID as our standard. It’s to help our technology part of our elections work smoother, to take the human error part out of it and yes to some extent make sure the voters feel we are doing our job on the integrity side.”

Pate points out a new twist for those individuals that don’t have a driver’s license is having their voter ID cards with them. Pate says if you are an eligible voter, you can apply for a voter ID card through your respective county auditor’s office.

A dry run with the new process for several communities will be in the upcoming primary election on June 5th.
