On Memorial Day Morning dozens of community members gathered at Freedom Rock Park in Guthrie Center to honor the nation’s fallen heroes. The Omar B. Shearer American Legion Post No. 124 hosted the program, which began with patriotic music from Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center band and choir students.
Following the pledge of allegiance and invocation, guest speaker Josh Overfors addressed the crowd. Overfors, a veteran himself and pastor of First Baptist Church in Guthrie Center, spoke about the opportunity to speak to those assembled. “It really is a privilege to be able to do this because today, in Memorial Day, we’re honoring those who have given their all for our country. We’re thankful for our veterans and it’s great to thank a veteran, but to remember those who have given their all.”
Overfors also encouraged those who do not have a personal connection with someone who lost their lives in the line of duty to research the area and visit the cemeteries to see the names of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Members of the local Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion also gave their remarks. The program concluded with the ceremonial wreath laying, 21 gun salute, and the playing of Taps.
