There’s no excuse for anyone to be bored this weekend, as Dallas County Conservation is offering four different activities for people of all ages.
The first event is Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Forest Park Museum, and it focuses on art and skulls. Naturalist “Critter” Cindy Blobaum and local artist Teena Case will be hosting a program on skull sketching. Attendees are encouraged to bring graphite pencils and a sketchbook. Also on Saturday, people are invited to the next Summer River Float event on the Raccoon River. The subject for the paddle will be mussels and what they do for a river ecosystem. Participants will be informed ahead of the event about when and where it will take place.
The following day, Conservation is continuing its series on Monarch Butterfly habitats from 2-4 p.m. at the Kuehn Conservation Area. The program is part two of the summer Monarch events, and will focus on site planning and preparation. Finally, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, the public is invited for an evening of family fishing fun at the Glissman Conservation Area. The event is being held as a part of Iowa Free Fishing Weekend, and promises to be a fun time for novice and expert anglers.
Forest Park Museum Curator Pete Malmberg is excited for each of this weekend’s programs. He admits, it may seem like a lot of events for one weekend, but he believes the variety of activities means there’s something fun for everyone. “There’s stuff later in the month too, but that first weekend’s just crazy! Please come out and come to some of these programs. We’d love to have you attend a lot of these things, you’ll learn a lot, you can meet some new friends, it’s a great time!”
Anyone interested in taking part in any of this weekend’s programs will need to register ahead of time, though each event is free and open to the public.
