For a majority of the season, the Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora has treated Panorama sophomore Kolby Shackelford very well. In fact, Shackelford’s lifetime best round came last month during the Hal Rossow Invitational Golf Tournament where the second year high school student tied the school record by carding a six under 66. However, during the West Central Activities Conference Golf Tournament on May 2, Shackelford posted his worst 18 hole score of the season with a 14 over 86. Friday’s District tournament marked the first 18 hole competition at Lake Panorama National since his sub-par conference performance, and Shackelford didn’t disappoint by shooting a tournament-best two under 70 to win medalist honors and to qualify for this week’s Class 2A State Golf Tournament in Marshalltown.
Panorama head golf coach David Van Ahn spoke with the Raccoon Valley Radio Network after Friday’s district round and said the outcome of the conference tournament was the best thing that could’ve happened to Shackelford. “That really set him up for understanding that golf is an every swing, everyday thing.” Van Ahn said, ” He’s come back dramatically from that, playing really good golf and I look forward to him going to the state meet and really doing well at the state meet.”
