The Memorial Day holiday is a busy time for motorists across the country. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office will be keeping an extra eye out for driving infractions over the next couple of weeks. They’re participating in the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (IDPS) “Click It or Ticket” campaign from May 21-June 3.
The concentrated effort will specifically focus on those not wearing seat belts. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10,428 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants were killed in crashes in the United States in 2016. That number accounts for nearly half of all vehicle fatalities in the same year. Lack of restraints also accounted for 56 percent of all nighttime vehicle fatalities.
