A project is currently underway to preserve several thousands of pages of documents for Greene County.

Cott System is scanning historical documents of the County’s records that are kept in the County Recorder and  Auditor’s vaults. Records include deed books, property transfers, road names, plats and change of titles. The County Board of Supervisors approved to fund the project after it failed to garner any grant funding, because the Supervisors felt it necessary to preserve that history. County Recorder Marcia Tasler talks about her reaction when the Supervisors approved the project.

“I was beyond excited. I’ve wanted this project to be done for a while for the preservation of these records. It’s the (only) copy we have and they are getting in some frail condition. So I was beyond excited to (get) this project done.”County Records pic 2

Records go back to as far as 1855. The originals will be kept in the courthouse vaults and the goal is to have everything digitized so that the public or other entities wanting to know information can look it up online instead of having to physically travel to the courthouse.

Half of the over $100,000 project has already been paid through the County’s general fund and informational technology/data processing department, with the other half to be paid in the next fiscal year. The project is expected to be completed before the end of the month.
