Class 1A and 4A schools were in action this morning for day two of the Iowa high school track and field coed state championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The distance medley for girls in 1A was the first event on the track. The Raccoon Valley Radio listening area had two teams in the event, both in the second section of a three section final. Nodaway Valley won the section in 4:22.05 with Joslyn Christensen, Sadie Marnin, Mallory Kuhns, and Reagan Weinheimer. Earlham was third in that section in 4:26.39 with Kaitlynn Nielsen, Kelcie Hale, Katie Noah, and Rachel Luke. The overall results sheet shows NV was fourth and E’lam eighth, both running out of section two, meaning two more area top eight place winners, the first two of the day.
Lexi Shike of Nodaway Valley qualified for Saturday 1A 100 meter hurdles final. The freshman was second in her heat of the preliminaries in 16.20 seconds and enters the final with the fifth fastest qualifying time.
Earlham finished the 4 x 200 meter relay final for boys in fourth place in 1:32.34 with Lazerick Matchen, Devin Crees, Jason Hopp, Jacob Ridgely.
Earlham’s girls were not as fortunate as they finished twenty-fourth in 1:53.28 with Tara Laporte, Emmaleigh Carter, Kaitlynn Nielsen, and Kelcie Hale.
Earlham had its boys in section one of the distance medley relay. The Cardinals were third in the section and eleventh overall in 3:41.62 with Devin Crees Jason Hopp, Caleb Swalla, and Alex Caskey.
Both the Earlham and Nodaway Valley girls ran the prelims of the 4 x 100 meter relay and neither made the final. NV was tenth in 52.13 seconds with Jena Yonker, Shike, Reagan Weinheimer, and Sadie Marnin. Earlham was 21st in 52.97 with Kaitlynn Nielsen, Kelcie Hale, Tara Laporte, and Marina Brightman.
Earlham qualified its boys 4 x 100 meter relay for the Saturday final by finishing second in its heat and the fifth fastest qualifier in 44:52 seconds. That quartet was comprised of Lazarick Matchem, Devin Crees, Jason Hopp, and Jacob Ridgely.
The 4 x 400 meter relay prelims saw Earlham in both the girls and boys competition. The girls were eighth in their heat in 4:28.35 and will not make the final. That group was Katie Noah, Rachel Luke, Tara Laporte, and Rachel Smith.
The Earlham boys were sixth in their heat in 3:31.89 with Caleb Swalla, Alex Firch, Jake Willem, and Lazerick Matchem, but were disqualified.
