The Greene County School Board met Wednesday in regular session.
The Board unanimously voted to advertise to hire a new guidance counselor position. Payment would come from the general fund and the position will most likely be based at the elementary school. The Board also approved an amendment to the 2017-18 budget as presented, the teacher leadership contracts for next school year, amended the 403b plan document to include a ROTH IRA-type of retirement allowances, the 2018-19 Region XII Council of Governments and Western Iowa Transit Service agreement, the baseball and softball officials and the 2018-19 registration fees as presented.
Additionally, the Board approved a shared technology technician with Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency for 20 days throughout next school year to make various upgrades to different systems. Two other items the Board approved included hiring Lisa Garnett for the expansion of the work based learning program and the district career guidance plan for 7th-12th grade students.
The Board then had a discussion regarding the purchase or refurbishment of the wrestling mats. Following the discussion, the Board tabled a decision due to needing to know the cost difference of buying a foam undermat and recondition the two current mats or having the Fieldhouse buy the foam undermat while the district pays to have the two current mats reconditioned.
During open forum, high school math teacher Patty Fisher addressed the Board about losing teachers at the high school. She thought that over the past five years, the district had lost eight teachers and only replaced two and two-thirds of those positions. However, she claimed the district gained 90 students in that same time frame, which includes students from East Greene that joined the district when it consolidated. She made a plea to the Board to stop the reduction of teaching positions at the high school. The Board made no comment due to the topic being presented in open forum.
