This season the ACGC girls track and field team featured five seniors, three of which were involved in qualifications for this week’s state meet.
Girls Head Coach Colin Shawgo gave high praise to his senior class the last two weeks on the Guthrie County PM Sports Page. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio, senior long-distance runner Emma Swanson will be remembered as one of the best to put on the Charger uniform. “She is going to go down as one of the elite ever distance runners in school history. She, I think, has a really good chance of going out and getting some medals this weekend and this being her third state track appearance, I’m really excited to see what she can do.”
Classmate Sara Schmeling was supposed to run the 400 for the state-bound distance medley relay team. However, she gave up her spot due to traveling abroad. Shawgo says that speaks volumes of her character. “She knew she wasn’t going to be able to compete in the state meet because she is traveling abroad and it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her. But she still showed up and worked hard every day and she was able to help a couple of events qualify to state. So I think that helps put her and her personality in a very good light.”
The other senior competing at the blue oval this weekend is Mady Smith. She qualified as a member of the 4×200 and distance medley relay teams. Sabrina Ure and Hailey Bates round out the senior class for the Charger girls.
