Nevada set the tone early on Tuesday in Grand Junction en route to a 7-3 high school boys’ soccer victory over Greene County in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference action. The Cubs scored with 42 seconds into the match, but they weren’t done. A second goal took place with 36:53 left on the first half, and goal number three happened just 55 seconds later. In summary, Nevada led 3-0 after just 4:02 had gone off the clock.

Luis Velasco fed Leo Marqus for an assist on the first of his two goals to make it 3-1. That came with 24:22 left in half number one, but Nevada’s fourth goal came with 23:42 remaining in the opening half. With 17:37 to go in the first half, the Cubs expanded their advantage to 5-1.

Nevada scored the first two goals of the second half and led 7-1 before the Rams scored the last two goals of the match. Junior Gutierrez scored with 28:21 to play and Marques collected  a second goal with 25:18 to go. Marques now has 31 goals on the season. He entered the week as the state of Iowa’s top high school goal scorer regardless of class.

The Cubs improve to 7-4 while the Rams fell to 9-7.
