Minburn Freedom Rock

If you’ve driven through Minburn on Highway 169 this week, you may have noticed a new addition.

The American Legion Post of Minburn recently placed a 3,200-pound boulder on the grass south of the 1914 Depot, which will eventually become Dallas County’s very own “Freedom Rock.” The rock was taken from Perry and transported to Minburn, where it will await its eventual paint job by Greenfield artist Ray “Bubba” Sorenson. For several years, Sorenson has been painting rocks with themes honoring the armed services, and his goal is to have one in all 99 Iowa Counties.

The Minburn Legion is footing the bill for the rock itself, but they will also soon be doing some fundraising to pay for a separate memorial at the site. Given Sorenson’s current schedule for painting other “Freedom Rocks” around the state, as well as his run for District 20 State Representative, the Dallas County rock will likely be completed some time in 2019.
