severe thunderstorm

A pair of severe thunderstorm warnings in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area activated the Severe Weather Action Team Tuesday evening.

The first storm was detected near Perry at 4:35 p.m., affecting northern Dallas County, all of Boone, and portions of Story. The biggest threat with the storm was hail as large as ping pong ball-sized, which was discovered near Woodward. The second severe thunderstorm warning came at 7:47, and started in western Guthrie County. It soon moved northeast and eventually included all of Greene County and northern Dallas once again. Threats with the second storm were primarily wind and torrential rain, which caused power outages in Jefferson and flooded streets in various cities. There was also reports of damage to farm buildings in Elkhorn that affected livestock.

The first severe thunderstorm was allowed to expire at 5:15 p.m., while the second expired at 9 p.m. Six members of the Raccoon Valley Radio Severe Weather Action Team, as well as Weather Eye meteorologists, and Guthrie and Adair County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf participated in the storm coverage.
