It seems every time there’s a last second addition to the ACGC boys track and field schedule, Noah Nelsen finds a way to break a record. At Van Meter two weeks ago, the junior broke the record in the 3200 meter run by seven seconds. At the I-35 Boys Invitational on Tuesday, Nelsen added the AC/GC 1600 meter record to his belt, running a personal best and meet record 4:41.36. The previous best time was set by Guthrie Center’s Samuel Courtney, as he finished 12th at the 2016 Iowa State Track Meet with a time of 4:43.10.
Nelsen credits his recently upward trend in personal bests to discipline in all areas of preparation. “Freshman year, I didn’t really take it all that seriously. But as the years have progressed (I) started cutting down on my diet. Just working even more hard at practice just to get to that next level and just knowing who the competition is and trying to stick with them.”
The girls team also had an extra opportunity to compete at the Dallas Center-Grimes Fillie Invitational on Tuesday. Sophomore Kate Crawford ran the fastest time in the 1500 and junior Mady McDermott threw the third longest shot put at the competition.
The boys finished in 7th as a team while the girls did not bring enough entries to qualify for scoring. Both squads will hit the oval this afternoon at West Central Valley for the Wildcat Relays. First events begin in Stuart at 4:30.
