Tomorrow is the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School mass shootings. In remembrance of that tragedy and in light of recent shootings, students around the United States will be participating in National Student Walkout Day.
Some area schools are allowing students to take part, though with rules in place. The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District will allow students to peacefully protest in front of the high school from 3:11-3:35 p.m. The District says they believe students can and should exercise their right to free speech, but disruption of school activities won’t be tolerated. ADM High School Principal Lee Griebel says if students choose to walkout during any instructional time when they should be in class, it will be treated as an unexcused absence resulting in twice the time missed being assigned as a consequence.
The school emphasizes that walkout demonstrations are not sponsored activities. They encourage parents to discuss any planned protests with the students prior to tomorrow. Additionally, ADM will have staff outside during the allotted time to supervise protests and ensure the safety of everyone involved. Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to reach out to Griebel.
