Coach Carl Behne’s Greene County boys’ soccer team improved to 5-1 with a 3-0 victory over West Central Valley on Tuesday in Grand Junction under cold and breezy conditions. Sophomore Junior Gutierrez scored all three goals, two in the first half and another in the second. Two of the goals came on free kicks, including the final goal of the game that Gutierrez bent past a trio of defenders, then the goalie.The goals came with 17:19 and 15:03 remaining in the first half, and 28:07 to play in the second half. Luis Tuesta and Luis Velasco had assists on the second goal.

Coach Behne told Raccoon Valley Radio he was proud of the way the team played and very pleased with the shut out. “I liked the way we bounced back after a loss (5-0 at Harlan on Monday), and the way we played without Leo (leading scorer Leo Marques).

The Rams are ranked 14th in the Class 1A rankings from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. Next on the schedule is a trip to Panora to face Panorama on Thursday. The Panthers, like the Rams, are a first year soccer program.
