A Democratic candidate for governor made two campaign stops in Jefferson Tuesday.

Fred Hubbell first visited Bill Frederick’s farm in southern Greene County. The stop was part of Hubbell’s “Standing Up For Iowa’s Farmers Tour.” Hubbell learned about Frederick’s company, Iowa Cover Crop, and how he has developed it to provide ways to spread cover crop over large amounts of acres.

Other topics Hubbell discussed with a small group of farmers included: changing nutrient strategies, utilizing Practical Farmers of Iowa programs for those just starting out in the farming industry and Certified Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). Hubbell says rather than putting a moratorium on CAFOs, he would rather bring together a ‘Blue Ribbon Commission” made up of individuals in different areas of the industry and government. “Get that started right away and bring people together, and get results in the first legislative session of 2019. We don’t need to study it for years, but we need to study for a little period of time. And get an agreement from the livestock industry as well as local community officials, local citizens and local farmers about the changes that we need to make so there’s proper balance in the whole master matrix.”

Hubbell also made a stop at the Milwaukee Depot in Jefferson for a public meet and greet. He is one of six candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for governor in the June primary.
